How “Seeing Stars” Helps Children Build Strong Literacy and Language Skills

Some children may:

  • Guess words based on pictures instead of reading the letters

  • Struggle to blend sounds when reading

  • Have difficulty spelling simple words

  • Forget what they just read in a sentence

  • Avoid reading because it feels frustrating

Often, the challenge isn’t just about memorising words. It is about developing the underlying cognitive processes that support reading and language.

One powerful approach we use in Educational Therapy to support these skills is Seeing Stars®.

In this blog:

What Is Seeing Stars?

Seeing Stars is a research-based program developed by the Lindamood-Bell organisation that helps children develop symbol imagery.

Symbol imagery refers to the brain’s ability to visualise letters and words in the mind.

This skill is essential for reading and spelling because children need to be able to:

Three children on a wooden floor hold large orange letters L, A, S with lights. They're smiling in a cozy indoor setting.

  • See letters clearly

  • Remember the order of letters

  • Blend sounds

  • Recognise word patterns

When children develop strong symbol imagery, reading becomes more accurate, fluent, and meaningful.

Why Some Children Struggle With Reading

Many children with reading difficulties are unable to form clear mental images of letters and words. Instead, they may rely on other strategies such as:

Two children facing a blue wall with photos and question marks. One wears orange, the other patterned. Mood is curious and playful.
  • Guessing from pictures

  • Memorising whole words

  • Skipping unfamiliar words

  • Avoiding reading altogether

While these strategies might work temporarily, they do not build the strong literacy foundation needed for long-term learning.

Seeing Stars helps children slow down and truly process what they see in print.

How Seeing Stars Strengthens Literacy Skills

Through structured and engaging activities, Seeing Stars helps children learn to:

  1. Build Phonological Awareness

Children learn to identify and manipulate individual sounds in words, such as breaking down and blending sounds like /b/ /a/ to form “ba.”

This strengthens their ability to decode new words independently.

  1. Visualise Letters and Words

Children practice forming clear mental images of letters and words so they can:

    1. recognise spelling patterns

    2. remember letter order

    3. decode unfamiliar words more easily

  2. Improve Reading Accuracy

Instead of guessing words, children learn to look closely at each letter and process words accurately.

  3. Strengthen Spelling

When children can clearly visualise words, spelling becomes much easier because they can “see” the word in their mind before writing it.

  4. Support Language Comprehension

Seeing Stars also strengthens the ability to hold and process information, which supports understanding sentences and stories.

How We Use Seeing Stars in Educational Therapy

At our centre, Seeing Stars is integrated into individualised Educational Therapy sessions.

Rather than drilling, we focus on helping children build the foundational thinking and literacy processes needed for long-term learning.

Sessions may include:

  • Sound blending and segmentation activities

  • Letter and word visualisation exercises

  • Structured reading tasks

  • Multi-sensory learning using tiles, cards, and hands-on materials

  • Guided practice to strengthen attention and processing

Our goal is to help children move from guessing words to confidently decoding and understanding what they read.

Every Child Can Build Strong Reading Skills

Reading is not simply about ability or effort - it depends on the underlying processes that support learning.

When children develop phonological awareness and symbol imagery, reading becomes more accessible, accurate, and confident.

At Total Communication, we support children through structured Educational Therapy that strengthens these foundational skills. With the right guidance, children can move from frustration to greater confidence and success in literacy.
