Psychological Assessments
Psychological assessments are suitable for anyone who wishes to understand his/her cognitive and academic abilities. It is sometimes required by schools to assess a child’s suitability for enrolment.
Cognitive assessment, typically known as an IQ test, provides a current estimate of the individual’s cognitive abilities essential for learning and problem-solving. It is commonly administered as part of the diagnosis process for Specific Learning Disorder (SLD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Intellectual Disability (ID), or for the testing of giftedness. The achievement test presents a current overview of academic abilities which helps to identify strengths and weaknesses in various academic aspects.
If an individual is struggling with learning, a psychological assessment may be recommended by a psychologist to clarify the issues underlying the difficulty in learning. On the other hand, a psychological assessment is also useful for assessing giftedness in individuals who may require further stimulation in learning.
Psychological Interventions
Psychological interventions are geared towards improving socio-emotional well-being in general.
Society has become increasingly stressful and people who are more vulnerable than others to stressful situations tend to be more affected. These people, be it adults, teens, or children, may struggle to cope with the stressors, thus, causing mental well-being to deteriorate. As a result, other aspects of life may be affected which then contributes to a vicious cycle and a downward spiral.
Psychologists provide a safe space for individuals to talk about challenges, process difficult feelings, and overcome the challenges eventually. Interventions are sometimes sought by parents who wish to better understand their children and improve their relationship with them. You may also find psychological intervention helpful if you just wish to have someone to talk to or gain a better understanding of yourself.
