Our multi-disciplinary team of speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and educational therapists have conceptualized and developed the Mustard Seed Programme that aims to address fundamental areas of difficulty in students. The programme focuses on three key areas:

  1. Growth: The Mustard Seed Program's guiding principle is growth. Our team meticulously considers the various learning requirements of your kid and addresses these challenges at their root. The programme aims to help children reach their full potential for development, whether that means reintegrating them into society at large or offering them a specialized curriculum using a center-based approach.

  2. Community-based learning: This is an essential aspect of the Programme. We carefully select the activities to carry specific intentionality and maintain qualities of functionality that serve to increase the quality of life in both academic and social environments for students. Your child will be exposed to a social environment that aims to increase their social belonging and competence.

  3. Stimulating cognitive skills: Stimulating cognitive skills is another key focus area of the Mustard Seed Programme. We understand that thinking goals are paramount to helping students learn effectively. Our programme centres on three main facets: input, elaboration, and output. We equip your child to cope with incoming information, define and solve problems, and harness the concept of perspective-taking and thoughtful responses.

At Total Communication, we adopt a system of learning called Mediated Learning Experience (MLE) to optimize your child's learning. MLE is about "how" the guide seeks to interact to help the child internalize each meaningful experience. The child learns to learn through carefully structured tools that enhance cognition and thinking skills. A successful recipient of the mediated learning experience is self-motivated to learn and asks many useful questions to advance their learning.

We understand that some students may need a temporary solution to fill a learning gap, while others require a long-term schooling option. Our multi-disciplinary team has designed two offerings under the Mustard Seed Programme to address the fundamental areas of difficulty for students – the Day Programme and the Partial Programme.

These programmes cater to individuals who require a more specialized approach to their education due to the various difficulties they face. Let's take a closer look at each programme and suggest which one may be better in which case.

Day Programme

The Day Programme is suitable for individuals who have not been accepted into a school system due to various difficulties, including behavioural issues, but still require educational and therapeutic input. The programme focuses on building their capacities for functional life skills, such as self-care, basic literacy, and numeracy skills for everyday tasks. This programme is ideal for those who may take a more vocational path in the future or for those who need more intensive support to re-integrate into a school setting upon meeting the goals of the programme.

Partial Programme

The Partial Integration Programme is a part-time programme that allows individuals to still be part of their current school system while focusing more intensively on strengthening the core areas mentioned previously. This highly collaborative programme involves planning with the student, their family, the school, and Total Communication's multidisciplinary team to create comprehensive and individualized goals to maximize opportunities at school while targeting core skill areas at the centre.

So, which programme is better?

It depends on the individual's needs and goals. If the individual has been unable to integrate into a school system due to various difficulties, the Day Programme may be a better fit. On the other hand, if the individual is currently enrolled in a school system but requires more intensive support in specific areas, the Partial Programme may be more suitable. The multidisciplinary team at Total Communication can help determine which programme is the best fit for each individual based on their unique needs and goals.

In conclusion, the Mustard Seed Programme at Total Communication is an alternative mode of education that caters to your child's fundamental difficulties in tandem with academic goals and life skills. Our programme targets the maximum growth potential of your child, fosters holistic growth of mind and mindset in students, and encourages community-based learning and stimulating cognitive skills. Our Mediated Learning Experience seeks to optimize your child's learning and instill in them the ability to learn.

Give your child the best start in life with Total Communication's Mustard Seed Programme.
