What Happens After EIPIC (Early Intervention Plans for Infants and Children) Ends?

What Happens After EIPIC (Early Intervention Plans for Infants and Children) Ends?

When your child reaches the end of their Early Intervention Programme for Infants & Children (EIPIC) journey, the structure you're used to disappears. You go from weekly therapy sessions, regular updates, and a known system… to having to figure out the next step independently.

But you're not alone in this. And no, this isn't the end of the road. It’s just a different one.

When Does EIPIC End?

EIPIC usually ends when your child:

  • Turns 7 years old

  • Transitions into a formal school setting

  • Shows readiness for a more mainstream learning environment

You’ll be given some notice by your EIPIC centre. Sometimes this includes transition planning, but often, it's brief and you’ll have to take the lead.

What Changes After EIPIC?

The biggest shift? Support becomes less structured.

You’ll notice:

  • No more weekly in-centre therapy sessions

  • Limited school-based support unless you're in a SPED setting

  • More responsibility on you to coordinate services

If your child moves to a mainstream primary school, they may receive:

  • Allied Educator support (ALPs or LBS)

  • In-class differentiation

  • Possible learning support programmes

But these are not therapy. They’re classroom strategies, and the therapist-to-child ratio isn’t the same.

What are my options after EIPIC?

This depends on your child’s profile. Let's break it down.

  1. Mainstream Primary School

    Best if your child can:

    1. Follow classroom routines

    2. Understand and respond to instructions

    3. Handle transitions and sensory input

    4. Express needs independently

You might still need private therapy outside school hours.

  1. SPED School

This is an option if your child needs:

    1. A smaller teacher-to-child ratio

    2. Structured programmes with life skills focus

    3. Visual, sensory, and communication support daily

There are waiting lists, so prepare early.

  1. Private Intervention Centres

    These offer:

    1. Continuation of speech, occupational, or educational therapy

    2. 1:1 or small group learning

    3. Customised goals outside school

This is where centres like Total Communication come in.

We work with children who are:

    1. Too advanced for EIPIC but not ready for mainstream

    2. Already in school but still struggling with speech or regulation

    3. In SPED but require additional communication support

What Should I Be Watching For?

Even after EIPIC, your child might still need help.

Here are things to look out for:

  • Speech sounds are still unclear

  • Struggles to follow more than 1-step instructions

  • Avoids social play or parallel play

  • Meltdowns in noisy or unfamiliar environments

  • Can’t sit still or attend for more than 5 - 10 minutes

  • Gaps in reading, writing, or number concepts

You don’t have to wait for a teacher to flag it. You can take action early.

What if my Child is in Mainstream School but still needs help?

This is a common scenario.

The school may say:

“Let’s monitor for now.”“It’s just a phase.”“He’ll catch up.”

But deep down, you know your child is still struggling with:

  • Speaking fluently in front of others

  • Understanding classwork

  • Making friends or dealing with frustration

At Total Communication, we support children after EIPIC in both mainstream and SPED settings.

We create clear therapy goals based on what’s happening in school. We guide you on what to share with the teacher. We support classroom participation, not just development milestones.

What Do Parents Usually Do Next?

Let’s be honest. Most parents:

  • Google “What happens after EIPIC ends?”

  • Ask around in WhatsApp groups

  • Wait and see if school support kicks in

  • Feel overwhelmed with all the info but have no clear plan

That’s where having a therapy partner matters.

You don't need to worry, all you need is someone who can assess, guide, and plan next steps, with your child’s long-term growth in mind.

What Makes a Good Post-EIPIC Plan?

Your child’s next phase should include:

  • Clear communication goals

  • School-readiness support

  • Functional life skills and emotional regulation

  • Parent involvement

  • Coordination between therapy and school

That’s exactly how Total Communication works.

We’re not a tuition centre. We don’t overload kids with worksheets. We work on practical progress, in speech, learning, behaviour, and confidence.

Still figuring it out?

Start small. Ask yourself:

  • Can my child keep up in class?

  • Are they understood by others?

  • Are they making friends?

  • Are they coping emotionally?

If you're unsure, book a consultation.

At Total Communication, we’re here to work with you. To build a support plan that fits your child not someone else’s.
